Silk Paintings
Silk has become an integral part of my practice. Its softness and translucency direct the movement of pigment across the surface; paint bleeds and shifts in ways that are difficult to control. There is something almost life-like in working with it, a dialogue between me and the materials: the shine, the movement, the non-conformity of its bleeds.

HORIZONS
I once read that people during medieval times believed that each being on Earth had a parallel equivalent in the ocean. You could find lions and sea lions, cows and sea cows, chickens and sea chickens. There were also horses and seahorses (the latter would be my favourite), or, as the Greeks used to refer to them, Hippocampi. They were symbols of divine power over water, speed, and the balance between land and sea.
Although we have discovered most places on Earth, the ocean still remains a mystery to us, keeping the gates of our imagination open to all the possibilities of what kind of life can exist within its depths.

IN DEFENCE OF HER INNOCENCE
This painting is my intimate tribute to my favourite story from childhood.
The story of The Little Mermaid, a young teenager who is willing to give up her life in the sea to gain a human soul.
Through gentle brushstrokes, I am looking to explore the fragile and usually chaotic space of youth.
I wanted to capture the heavy price she pays for her choices, but without the usual societal condemnation. We often demand that the young be flawless role models, forgetting that the right to make reckless mistakes is exactly what makes us human.

THE DIALOGUE OF FREEDOM
A dialogue is taking place between a group of misfits.
On the soft surface of silk, sea creatures from different backgrounds gather, for they are all connected by one truth.
It is something I have experienced first-hand: the feeling of being an outcast and not having the means to belong with the regular crowd. But it is in the companionship of other misfits that I found a safe space, a space of acceptance and belonging, where the quirks of my artistic side were not judged but rather embraced.
It is such a strong feeling of liberation that all artists can relate to. They have all felt it before in search of their artistic footing.

SHIMMERING DUNES
It was a hot summer day when I came upon a fabric shop in my neighbourhood. I walked inside and was greeted by a kind salesman. In that moment, he showed me a kind of silk I had not seen before. It had a gold shine to it, almost like sand under the scorching sun. He told me that it was the last piece he had left, and because I could not bear the thought of not finding this fabric again, I got as much as I could and ran home, excited about all the new things I could create.
Continuing with the theme of sand, as mentioned previously, I thought it would be a good idea to dive deeper into the narrative and history of the Silk Road. That was a time when multiple cultures interacted with each other, shared their skills and influenced one another. From Greece, the land of the sea, to China, the land of dragons, and through the help of camels and horses, I wanted to create a visual map of this journey, transitioning from sea monsters to loyal steeds and, finally, into a mighty dragon. This piece celebrates the cultural exchange between regions, their respect for one another, and the growth of the individuals who went through such a treacherous journey.

SHAPE OF FREEDOM
From a young age I was fascinated by the imagery of angels. Which is why I find it really curious how the Ancient Greeks decided to depict three of their gods in a similar form, the god of sleep, of death and of love. What was the connection between those three? From all the crazy forms these entities could have why was the representation of freedom chosen for them?
Freedom is the word I wish to focus on. The ultimate freedom we can ever really hope to get close to is the realm of dreams. Love does possess the idea of freedom but in my mind it is an illusion, it may feel like freedom but in reality it simply possesses a very long chain which takes time to notice. And of course, death you could say it is the ultimate freedom but it is impossible to tell.

FATHOMS BELOW
This painting is all about dimension, playing between the vulnerability and softness of silk and the hardness of the clay that surrounds it. It is funny how such opposite materials go so well together.
In fact, I feel like they project a perfect reflection of myself: what is going on inside my soul and the image I project to the world.
I am attracted to corals because, in my eyes, they are such unique animals. They are often mistaken for plants, and although they are very subtle, they hold great importance for the survival of the ocean ecosystem. Despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor, corals provide food and shelter, absorb wave energy, and can reduce the force of tsunamis and storm surges by up to 97%!

OCEAN JEWEL
Nature has long been a source of inspiration, as well as providing us with all the essentials we need to survive. However, it is important to understand that, through our actions, we have caused great harm to ecosystems, which in some cases can be irreversible.
In this work, the sea creature has turned into something monstrous, angry and threatening, highlighting her dissatisfaction and frustration with our actions. As nature has it, if we do not change our ways, nature will find a way to fight back and reclaim what is hers.

THE ART OF WAR
I combined harsh brushstrokes with faded washes of ink over silk to create unsettling imagery, like a ghost of a distant past. I deliberately made these choices to convey the pain and cruelty of war.
In contrast, fine lines and delicate details can also be seen as part of the composition, commanding the utmost patience from both me and the viewer in order to comprehend them. This piece honours the wise words of Sun Tzu: “True mastery involves winning through strategy, diplomacy, and psychology, rather than brute force.”
