I once read that people during the medieval times believed that each being on earth had a parallel equivalent in the ocean. You could find lions and sea lions, cows and sea cows, chicken and sea chicken. Horses and sea horses, that would be my favorite, or as the Greeks used to refer to them as Hippocampi. They were a symbol of divine power over water, speed, and the balance between land and sea.
Although we have discovered most places on earth the ocean still remains a mystery to us. Keeping the gates of our imagination open to all the possibilities of what kind of life can exist to its depth.

This painting is my intimate tribute to my favourite story from childhood.
The story of the little mermaid, a young teenager who is willing to give up her life in the sea to gain a human soul.
Through gentle brushstrokes, I am looking to explore the fragile and usually chaotic space of youth.
I wanted to capture the heavy price she pays for her choices, but without the usual societal condemnation. We often demand that the young be flawless role models, forgetting that the right to make reckless mistakes is exactly what makes us human.

A dialogue is taking place between a group of misfits.
In the soft surface of silk, sea creatures from a different background gather, for they are all connected by one truth.
It is something I have experience first hand, the teeling of being an outcast, not having the means to belong with the regular crowd. But it is in the companionship of other misfits that I found a safe spaces, a space of acceptance, of belonging, where the quirks of my artistic side were not being judge but rather embraced.
It is such a strong feeling of liberation that all artist can relate to. They all have felt it before in search of their artistic footing.
“Shimmering Dunes”

It was a hot summer day when I came upon a fabric shop in my neighborhood. I walked inside and I was greeted by a kind salesman. In that moment he showed me a kind of silk I have not seen before, it had a gold shine to it almost like sand under the scorching sun. He told me that was the last piece he had left and me because I can't bear the thought of not finding this fabric again got as much as I could and run home excited about all the new things I can create.
Continuing on the theme of the sand, as mentioned previously, I thought it would be a good idea to dive deeper into the narrative and history of the Silk Road. That was a time where multiple cultures interacted with each other, share their skills and influence. From Greece, the land of sea, to China, the land of Dragons, through the help of camels and horses I wanted to create a visual map of this journey, transcending from sea monsters, to loyal steeds, into a mighty dragon. This piece is to celebrate the cultural exchange between regions, the respect for on another and the growth of the individuals who went through such treacherous journey.
“Fathoms below”

This painting is all about dimension, playing between the vulnerability and softness of silk in contrast with the hardness of clay that surrounds it. It's funny how such opposite materials go so well together.
In fact I feel like they project a perfect reflection of my own self, what is going on inside my soul and the image I project to the world.
1 am attracted to corals because in my eyes they are such unique animals, often mistaken for plants, which although very subtle they hold such great importance to the survival of the ocean ecosystem. Despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor, corals provide food, shelter, and even absorb wave energy and can reduce the force of tsunamis and storm surges by up to 97%!

Nature has long being a source of inspiration as well as providing us with all the essentials to survive but it is important to understand that through our actions we have caused great harm to the ecosystems which in some cases can be irreversible. In this work, the sea creature have turned into something monstrous, angry and threatening high- lights their dissatisfaction and frustration of our actions and as nature has it if we don’t change our ways nature will fund a way to fight back and claim back what is hers.

Harsh brush strokes combined with faded washes of ink over silk to create an unsettling imagery, like a ghost of a distant past. These choices were deliberately made by the artist to convey the pain and cruelty of war. In contrast, fine lines and delicate details can also be seen to be a part of the composition, which command the outmost patience from both the artist and the viewer in order to comprehended them. This piece honours the wise words of Sun Tzu “True mastery involves winning through strategy, diplomacy, and psychology, rather than brute force”.
